Welcome to the Cyberspace August
Newsletter
The last couple of months have been busy as usual. A large volume
of new technology and software releases have either occurred or are
about to launch. This has meant that we need to review them so
that we can better support them. The major one is Microsoft
Internet Explorer V7. If you are not yet using this new
browser, visit Microsoft's
website and download now for added functionality and security.
All ISPs are currently experiencing huge amounts of spam.
This volume has again been overwhelming and despite our constant
efforts, they are slipping though. See our section on spam to
see if you are doing enough to counteract this problem.
Website Relaunch
It seems that as soon as you redesign a website it is time to
review it again. We have given the Cyberspace website a fresh
new look as we slowly introduce more features and services enabling you to manage
your account with us. The introduction of telephone products has
also meant more self service options and information is required.
Very shortly our current site will be replaced.
The major changes for you will be the move of the link to Cyberspace
Webmail to the bottom left of the site. Have a quick preview
of the new look site here.

New Service - Remote Data Backup
If your computer crashed - what would you lose?
Cyberspace has partnered with Spheritec to offer Datagard from as
low as 67c/day.
Secure, consistent data protection is a critical
element of business stability and disaster recovery.
Today’s business operators are challenged to
administer their data protection processes amidst rapid growth and
progressively more distributed networks. The fact is, alarmingly,
most small businesses neglect to perform backup altogether.
- Encrypted backup over the internet
- Secure vault storage with redundancy
- Automatic and Offsite
- Easy to use scheduling
- Customise your backup sets
- Restore anytime, anywhere at the click of a button

Spam Report
It drives us all crazy!
Cyberspace constantly review spam reduction measures
to ensure that as few as possible are getting through to your inbox.
There is currently a huge spam spike worldwide and we are caught up
in this. Our technicians are constantly strengthening our
protection and have engaged Cyberspace and other ISPs to retrain the
spam filters.
The latest batch of spammers are clever, they are
redesigning the volume as fast as they send them out.
What can you do?
Spammers rely on unprotected computers and our curiousity. As
always, follow these simple rules:
-
Update your virus protection at least weekly
-
If your anti virus does not monitor email
traffic, get one that does
-
Engage a firewall on your computer
-
Run additional spyware checks on your computer
using Ad-aware or similar weekly
-
Avoid programs such as Kazaa which are known
spam generators
-
Increase the spam filter level on your email
program - we recommend
Thunderbird as an excellent & free email program
-
Keep your computer up to date via
Windows Update
-
Do not open any suspicious emails
-
Consider upgrading to Windows XP if you are
currently using Windows 98 as this is no longer supported by
Microsoft.
Remember, Cyberspace will only send emails out which
contain our logo and the word Cyberspace in the Subject line.
Any other emails supposedly coming from us should be considered
unsafe.
Broadband Tips
If you are now utilising a broadband connection,
here are some further tips and reminders for how to maximise the use
of your connection.
Restarting your connection
We have a guide available
here or available
here in a PDF format. We notice that most problems occur as a
result of incorrectly filtered connections. Remember, the ADSL modem
should never be filtered, only the other equipment on the line
should be filtered.
Wireless Connections & Security
Currently, the big craze is how to 'steal' your
neighbour's internet bandwidth or access the internet for free.
Whilst this is one of the great benefits to wireless connectivity,
it is not considered ethical. If you connect to your internet
connection wirelessly, ensure your network is secure. Not only
can someone use your bandwidth but they could also steal or view
your private data on your computer. If you need assistance
with securing your wireless network, please consult your computer
technician or speak to us for a referral.
You remain responsible for all charges incurred on
your broadband connection regardless of how they were incurred.
Usage Checking
